King Edwards Road

The building, referred to as ‘Durigo House’ at 5 King Edwards Road is a converted 1920’s factory, with the overall refurbishments to provide new live/work units occurring around the year 1999.

The premises are located between the areas of London Fields and Victoria Park. The property sits outside of the Mare Street Conservation area, designated in 2000, the extents of which follows the apparent site boundary of the property.

Unit 118 is a 77sq/m (833sq/ft) split level property with a single aspect to the rear of the property. The property, organised in a slightly unorthodox arrangement across two levels, features a large mezzanine level which sits within the central area of the layout.

Although the space benefits from good floor to ceiling heights, the areas around the mezzanine space are fairly restricted which is further impounded at upper level by large downstand beams from the concrete soffit.

We were approached by the homeowner, an experienced private developer to support the refurbishment of his east London apartment to create a more efficient use of space and to create an additional bedroom.

Our role was to support the viability of the proposed refurbishments and design development through to assisting with the license to alter and building regulations approvals. Following receipt of approvals, the refurbishment was undertaken by the client working with a local fabricator to a high specification finish.
