National Trust Pod
In collaboration with creative agency LonelyLeap, Freehaus were appointed to design and make an environmentally conscious, visually arresting interactive, mobile recording studio that spoke of the National Trust ethos, embraced local craft and echoed its context.
Designed as a vehicle for discourse and debate, the recording studio is intended to be a focal point for vocal and passive communications; a tangible infrastructure that embodied the National Trust and embraced its end user communities.
“We look after coastline, forests, woods, fens, beaches, farmland, moorland, islands, archaeological remains, nature reserves, villages, historic houses, gardens, mills and pubs and one of the world’s largest art collections. We restore them, protect them and open them up to everyone. For the Trust, conservation has always gone hand-in-hand with public access. We welcome everyone to explore.”
The National Trust
To truly capture the breath of the National Trust’s responsibilities, our design approach was flexible and adaptable, yet pertinent. Grounded by the context of all chosen site locations, our ambition was to create a form that delivered on all levels. A vehicle to gather, curate and voice stories.
In collaboration with specialist makers, our ambition was for the design to celebrate, advertise and to be synonymous with the very best of National Trust craft.
“The pod will act as a recording booth on location inviting people to share their own personal stories, whilst recording a diverse range of stories from across the country.”
LonelyLeap Creative Agency
The specific performance requirement of a recording environment informs the shape and the material of the space, guiding how users can engage with places for the telling and sharing of stories. Whilst working with ethical material choices to create moments of joy, and minimising environmental impact.
Beyond the campaign we envisaged our outputs to be repurposed, as a walkers’ refuge, an information point, a space play, a sustainable habitat or a birdwatching hide, providing legacy.
